Christmas Training Programme: Top Tips for Keeping fit Over Festive Season

For many, Christmas is a time for over indulgence. Throw a year’s worth of carful dieting and training out the window for a few days of relaxation.

That can be just what you need to recharge the batteries, renew your enthusiasm and hit the next few months with more energy… But just like with all of life’s pleasures, moderation is the key.

Here are a few tips for getting the balance right over the festive season:

Tip 1: Train early. Don’t procrastinate. Get out and training as soon as possible. You’ll have got a few miles in and returned, showered and ready for festivities before the rest of the family are up. You’ll have the rest of the day to get stuck into fun.

Tip 2: Meet friends. Nothing like having an appointment to keep with a training partner to make sure you get out on time. Arrange an early morning rendezvous, do a nice steady few miles and let the endorphins do the rest.

Tip 3: Make it fun. It’s Christmas after all. What about mixing things up. Do a different route, try some orienteering style running. Explore. Anything to add a little variety to your running. There’s no better time than the Christmas break to see what other circuits might be on your doorstep.

Tip 4: boxing day blast. Your body will thank you for this. Put a run in your diary for the day after Christmas. Having this run nagging at the back of your mind might prevent the worst indulgences on Christmas. It will also break you from the booze / sugar induced coma, clearing you up for some boxing day fun. Most clubs have a traditional boxing day handicap. If they do this year – despite the dreaded ‘C’ virus – have a go. What’s the worst that can happen.

Tip 5: Treat injuries. Now is the perfect time to try to sort any lingering injuries. Take some time off, enjoy the festive season treats, massage tired muscles and stretch. You’ll be fighting fit for the next season. Hopefully.

Have fun. Stay fit. And enjoy a healthy balance of training and relaxation! Happy Christmas and New Year!
